Aviator Beanie Crochet Pattern

The Aviator Beanie is fun crochet pattern to make for any aviator lover!  This can be crocheted up for a fun photography photo shoot for airplanes, air balloon rides or whatever creative thing you can come up with.  This beanie would also be fun for kids play, dress up is always fun.  You can also wear this beanie on those chilly days. This beanie is also simple to work up and guess what, it uses chunky yarn, so it will also be quick to work up.  It can be customized with any color scheme and don't forget to add fun buttons.

Materials

  • Yarn: Bulky, Weight 5; Example made with Loops and Threads Charisma (Charcoal and Off White)
  • Hook: K (6.50mm)
  • 2 Buttons, Tapestry Needle, Scissors and Measuring Tape

Sizing

  • Gauge: 8 Stitches and 8 Rows = 4”x4” (hdc)
  • These measurements are approximated, measure head to get accurate sizing needed.

Notes

  • Chain 1 will NOT count as a stitch.
  • Joining: When ending the rounds, you will join with a slip stitch into the 1st stitch (not the chain 1).
  • Sample shown is worked with 2 colors, pattern is written for 2 colors, but the beanie is also beautiful in one solid color.

Aviator Beanie

ALL SIZES: (0-3M, 3-6M, 6-12M, 1-2Y, 3-10Y, Teen, Adult and Large Adult)

You Need Your K Hook and Two Color Choices of Yarn.

Start with Color 1, Make a Magic Ring,

Round 1: Ch 1, 7 sc in loop, join with a sl st in the 1st sc, pull tight. - 7

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 14

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 21

Round 4: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 28

CONTINUE TO THE SECTION OF THE SIZE YOU ARE MAKING

0-3 Months: (Circumference 13-14” and Height 5 - 5.5”)

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in st and each st around, join. - 28

Repeat Round 5 until the beanie measures 5 inches tall for newborn or 5.5 inches tall for 1-3 months, do not fasten off and continue to earflaps.

Earflaps: Sl st in next 4 sts

Row 1: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 5 sts. - 6

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st and each st across. - 6

Row 3: Ch 1 and turn, 1 hdc in same st, hdc2tog, hdc2tog, 1 hdc in last st.  - 4

Row 4: Ch 1 and turn, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st and each st across. - 4 Fasten off

Count across the front of the beanie 7 stitches, repeat earflaps beginning in 8th stitch (starting with Row 1).

Aviator Front Flap (Change to Color 2)

Row 1: Join with a ch 1 in the stitch to the left of the right earflap, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next 10 sts. - 11

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in each st across. - 11

Repeat Row 2 until the flap measures 3 inches tall.

Do NOT fasten off, sc around the entire beanie and aviator flap.  Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew the aviator flap onto the beanie.  Sew the two buttons on the front flap.

3-6 Months: (Circumference 15-16” and Height 6”)

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from* end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 35

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in st and each st around, join. - 35

Repeat Round 6 until the beanie measures 6 inches tall, do not fasten off and continue to earflaps.

Earflaps: Sl st in next 4 sts

Row 1: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 5 sts. - 6

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st and each st across. - 6

Row 3: Ch 1 and turn, 1 hdc in same st, hdc2tog, hdc2tog, 1 hdc in last st. - 4

Row 4: Ch 1 and turn, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st and each st across. - 4 Fasten off

Count across the front of the beanie 11 stitches, repeat earflaps beginning in 12th stitch (starting with Row 1).

Aviator Front Flap (Change to Color 2)

Row 1: Join with a ch 1 in the stitch to the left of the right earflap, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next 10 sts. - 11

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in each st across. - 11

Repeat Row 2 until the flap measures 3 inches tall.

Do NOT fasten off, sc around the entire beanie and aviator flap.  Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew the aviator flap onto the beanie.  Sew the two buttons on the front flap.




6-12 Months: (Circumference 16-18” and Height 6.5”)

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from* end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 35

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 7 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 8 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 39

Round 7: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in st and each st around, join. - 39

Repeat Round 7 until the beanie measures 6.5 inches tall, do not fasten off and continue to earflaps.

Earflaps: Sl st in next 4 sts

Row 1: Ch 1 and turn, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 7 sts. - 8

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, 1 hdc in same st, hdc2tog, hdc2tog, 1 hdc in last st. - 6

Aviator Front Flap (Change to Color 2)

Row 1: Join with a ch 1 in the stitch to the left of the right earflap, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next 11 sts. - 12

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in each st across. - 12

Repeat Row 2 until the flap measures 3.25 inches tall.

Do NOT fasten off, sc around the entire beanie and aviator flap.  Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew the aviator flap onto the beanie.  Sew the two buttons on the front flap.

1-2 Years: (Circumference 18-20” and Height 7”) 

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from* end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 35

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 42

Aviator Front Flap (Change to Color 2)

Row 1: Join with a ch 1 in the stitch to the left of the right earflap, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next 13 sts. - 14

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in each st across. - 14

Repeat Row 2 until the flap measures 3.5 inches tall.

Do NOT fasten off, sc around the entire beanie and aviator flap.  Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew the aviator flap onto the beanie.  Sew the two buttons on the front flap.

3-10 Years: (Circumference 19-20” and Height 7.5”) 

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from* end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 35

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 42

Round 7: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 9 sts*, repeat from*, join. - 46

Earflaps: Sl st in next 5 sts

Repeat Row 2 until the flap measures 3.75 inches tall.

Do NOT fasten off, sc around the entire beanie and aviator flap.  Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew the aviator flap onto the beanie.  Sew the two buttons on the front flap.




Teen, Adult and Large Adult: (Circumference 22-23” and Height 7.5” Teen, 8” Adult and 8.5” Large Adult) 

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from* end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 35

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 42

Lay the beanie flat with the front of the hat facing you.

Row 1: Join with a ch 1 in the stitch to the left of the right earflap, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next 15 sts.  - 16

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in each st across. - 16

Repeat Row 2 until the flap measures 3.75 inches tall for Teen, 4 inches tall for Adult or 4.25 inches tall Large Adult

Do NOT fasten off, sc around the entire beanie and aviator flap.  Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew the aviator flap onto the beanie.  Sew the two buttons on the front flap.
