The Brick by Brick Beanie is such a fun beanie to make because you can have a lot of fun with the color schemes.  This beanie uses simple stitches but by working in the round with as many colors as you want.  The beanie is just like it sounds, brick by brick, because it is blocks over colors around. Materials

  • Yarn: Medium, Weight 4; Your Color Choice. Sample is made with Vanna’s Choice(Raspberry, Sweet Pea and Aqua)
  • Hook: K (6.50mm)
  • Tapestry Needle, Scissors and Measuring Tape

Sizing

  • Gauge: 12 Stitches and 10 Rows = 4”x4” (hdc)
  • These measurements are approximated, measure head to get accurate sizing needed.

Notes

  • Chain 1 will NOT count as a stitch.
  • Joining: When ending the rounds, you will join with a slip stitch into the 1st stitch (not the chain 1).
  • When working in the stitches in the round below, you will work over the chain 3 and chain 2.

You Need Your K Hook and Your Color Choices of Yarn.

Start with Color 1, Make a Magic Ring,

Round 1: Ch 1, 7 sc in loop, join with a sl st in the 1st sc, pull tight. - 7

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 14

You will now begin alternating colors every round.

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 21

Round 4: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 28

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 35

0-6 Months: (Circumference 14-16” and Height 5 - 6”)

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st and each st around, join. - 35

Round 7: Ch 1, 1 dc in same st, *1 dc in next 3 sts, ch 3, skip next 3 sts; repeat from*, until last 2 sts, ch 2 and skip last 2 sts, join. - 19

Round 8: Ch 1, 1 dc in same st, *ch 3, skip next 3 sts, 1 dc in next 3 sts in round below; repeat from*, until the last ch 2, 1 dc in next 2 sts in round below, join. - 18

Round 9: Ch 1, 1 dc in same st, *1 dc in next 3 sts in round below, ch 3, skip next 3 stitches; repeat from*, until last 2 sts, ch 2 and skip last 2 sts, join. - 19

Repeat Rounds 8 & 9 until the beanie measures 5 inches tall for newborn, 5.5 inches tall for 1-3 months or 6 inches tall for 3-6 months, ending on Round 8, then continue to brim.

Brim: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, *1 sc in next 3 sts below, 1 sc in next 3 sts; repeat from*, until last 2 sts, 1 sc in last 2 sts, join. - 36

Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.   

6-12 Months: (Circumference 16-18” and Height 6.5”)

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 42

Round 7: Ch 1, 1 dc in same st, *1 dc in next 3 sts, ch 3, skip next 3 sts; repeat from*, until last 2 sts, ch 2 and skip last 2 sts, join. - 22

Round 8: Ch 1, 1 dc in same st, *ch 3, skip next 3 sts, 1 dc in next 3 sts in round below; repeat from*, until the last ch 2, 1 dc in next 2 sts in round below, join. - 21
