Chef Baby Crochet Pattern

Newborn props are one of my favorite to design and the Chef Baby is no exception!  Photography props are a great way to create themes for the upcoming newborn pictures.  You could make them for your own upcoming arrival or give them as baby gifts!  This set is created using basic crochet skills and can be customized in any color schemed for girls and boys!

Materials

  • Yarn: Medium, Weight 4; Your Color Choice(s). Sample is made with Vanna’s Choice (Pink Poodle and Black)
  • Hook: K (6.50mm)
  • Tapestry Needle, Scissors and Measuring Tape

Sizing

  • Gauge: 12 Stitches and 10 Rows = 4”x4” (hdc)
  • These measurements are approximated, measure head to get accurate sizing needed.

Pattern Key

  • St/Sts: Stitch(es)
  • Sl St: Slip Stitch
  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single Crochet
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Dc: Double Crochet

 Special Stitches:

  • Hdc2tog (Half Double Crochet): Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.
  • Sc2tog (Single Crochet): Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

Notes

  • Chain 1 will NOT count as a stitch.
  • Joining: When ending the rounds, you will join with a slip stitch into the 1st stitch (not the chain 1).

Round 1: Ch 1, 7 sc in loop, join with a sl st in the 1st sc, pull tight. - 7

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 14

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 21

Round 4: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 28

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 35

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 42

Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.

Optional: Add Ribbon around the center of the sc border of the bottom of the hat. Weave the ribbon around every few stitches with a tapestry needle and tie a bow in front.
