Cupcake Baby Crochet Pattern

Do you love sweet treats? The Cupcake Baby sure is sweet and will make all newborn baby photos adorable!  This crochet pattern is super fun to make and you can customize in any color scheme to make any cupcake theme you want!  This cupcake is chocolate with a buttercream frosting and of course don't forget those sprinkles and topping it with a cherry. This crochet pattern uses simple stitches to make with so let's make cupcakes!

Materials

  • Yarn: Medium, Weight 4; Your Color Choice. Sample is made with Vanna’s Choice (White, Chocolate, Scarlet, Aqua, Raspberry and Eggplant)
  • Hooks: H (5.00mm) & K (6.50mm)
  • Tapestry Needle, Scissors and Measuring Tape
  • Optional: Fiber Fill

Sizing

  • Gauge: 12 Stitches and 10 Rows = 4”x4” (hdc using K Hook)

Pattern Key

  • St/Sts: Stitch(es)
  • Sl St: Slip Stitch
  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single Crochet
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Dc: Double Crochet

Special Stitch:

  • FPHDC (Front Post Half Double Crochet): Yarn over, insert hook under post of stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Notes

  • Chain 1 will NOT count as a stitch.
  • Joining: When ending the rounds, you will join with a slip stitch into the 1st stitch (not the chain 1).



Cupcake Beanie: (Circumference 13-14” and Height 5 - 5.5”)

You Need Your K Hook and Your Color Choice of Yarn

Start with Color 1, Make a Magic Ring,

Round 1: Ch 1, 7 sc in loop, join with a sl st in the 1st sc, pull tight. - 7

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 14

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 21

Round 4: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 28

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 35

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 dc in same st, *1 sc in next st, 1 dc in next st; repeat from*, join. - 35

Repeat Round 6 until the beanie measures 3.5 inches tall for newborn or 4 inches tall for 1-3 months, then continue to ruffle frosting.

Ruffle Frosting

Working Front Loops ONLY - Round 1: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 5 dc in next st, *skip next st, 1 sc in next st, 5 dc in next st; repeat from*, join. - 12 ruffles

Working Back Loops ONLY - Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next st and each st around, join. - 35

Textured Bottom (Worked in Color 2, working in both loops)

Round 1: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, *1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 fphdc next st; repeat from*,

join. - 35

Repeat Round 1 until the beanie measures 5 inches tall for newborn or 5.5 inches tall for 1-3 months.  Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.

Sprinkles

You Need Your Tapestry Needle and Your Yarn Color Choices

Using your tapestry needle make sprinkles ¼ inch – ½ inch long, placing the sporadically on the beanie of each color.



Red Cherry

You Need Your H Hook and Red Yarn

Make a Magic Ring,

Round 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in loop, join with a sl st in the 1st sc, pull tight - 6

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 2 sc in each st around, join. - 12

Rounds 3-5: Ch 1, 1 sc same st and each st around, join. - 12

Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew onto beanie.

Note: Sew the stem on before attaching cherry to beanie.

Optional: Fill the cherry with fiber fill to keep the cherry nice and round.

Stem

You Need Your H Hook and Brown Yarn

Chain 7,

Fasten off and sew onto the top of the cherry.

Tushy Cover: (6 ½ inch diameter)

You Need Your K Hook and Your Color Choice of Yarn

Make a Magic Ring,

Round 1: Ch 1, 7 sc in loop, join with a sl st in the 1st sc, pull tight. - 7

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 14

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 21

Round 4: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 28

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 35

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts; repeat from*, join. - 41

Round 7: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st and each st around, join. - 41

Round 8: Ch 1, 1 dc in same st, *1 sc in next st, 1 dc in next st; repeat from*, join. - 41

Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.
