Leither Collection Subscription Box January 2020

Leither Collection Subscription Box January 2020

Did you know that we have a monthly crochet

subscription box called the Leither Collection?

With the love of crochet and everything about it we started a crochet subscription box back in October 2018.

I have been designing crochet patterns since 2012!  I love coming up with new designs and having a theme to create those designs.  After my husband started making crochet hooks last year after my crochet injury, I became inspired to crochet even more!

Then I started hand dyeing yarn and designing based on the colorway and weight of the yarn, that is when the Leither Collection Subscription Box was born!

I had known what our January 2020 theme was going to be for awhile when I first discovered the Alice in the Clock Stitch Marker.  The stitch marker is what set the tone for the January 2020 Leither Collection Subscription Box. Not only because I knew we would be creating the fun Alice in Wonderland theme but the stitch marker itself was my favorite shade of teal.  Once I had selected the stitch marker for this box, the theme just came to life on it's own!

I then designed the yarn, I originally wanted to add yellow to the yarn but I loved the subtle tones of blue, grey and cream together. Since the box was going to be designed in January and most of you are experiencing cold weather and snow, I didn't want any bold bright colors in the box.  Here in Texas, we get a little cold weather but no snow in our area, so I am living through all of you getting to enjoy a taste of snow.

Anyways, back to the box!

The (Alice in) Wonderland collection was a lot of fun to create, it was something that we could let the stitch maker set the tone and theme for the box and everything else that was added fit right in naturally.

Now let's dive deeper to our January 2020 Leither Collection Subscription box!

Last month our yarn colorway was the gorgeous Avocado Tweed that had beautiful shades of green with neutral tones of tweed in there.  This month we are shifting to the blue part of the color wheel and adding grey and cream.  One request I had received a lot when asking what crochet patterns you wanted to see in our 2020 boxes was socks, it was requested a lot.  Since socks are best made in sock yarn (of course), we are using our sock base this month.  The sock base is one of my favorite bases, because it has this amazing high twist ply and it makes those stitches stand out!  The color is always so vibrant on the sock base, you get to see the colorway come to life just a little more on the sock base.

The colorway this month is called Wonderland, it is divided into three parts, blue, cream and grey and together they create this gorgeous combination.  The yarn base is sock weight, so it is a weight one and is 100% superwash merino, so it is super squishy!! We love squishy yarn.  Because it is a sock weight that means each skein of yarn has 400 yards and it is 100 grams!  That is a lot of yarn!!

Let's talk about these gorgeous crochet hooks! First lets talk about the design of the hook this month, it has gorgeous details.  The hooks are always designed to not only have gorgeous details but the design helps reduce pressure points in your hand while crocheting! Those curves also bring out the colors and grain in the woods.

When I came across this funfetti wood (colored wood), I knew it would be perfect because it matched the colorway of the Wonderland yarn.  The funfetti hook has three colors in it, blue, grey and cream and now the yarn and funfetti hook are twins!!

The natural wood this month is a gorgeous bolivian rosewood which is a dark brown wood that has beautiful grain  Both of the hooks in the same style are gorgeous and unique in their own way.   Which one did you receive?

I love our Alice in the Clock Stitch Marker this month, not only is a fun stitch marker and when you look at it, you can quickly tell what the theme of the collection was.  This stitch marker is also elegant and beautiful in the coloring.

This month we did a little something new and fun.  Once I had decided on our (Alice in) Wonderland theme, I wondered if I could create an entire collection with the stitch makers and bring this collection to life just a little more.  I spent a bit of time searching for all the pieces that I could add.  Once, I found all the pieces to create the Alice in Wonderland Stitch Marker Collection, I wanted to do something fun with it.  Five random boxes received the complete stitch marker sets in their box.  Did you get the complete set in your box?

Now lets dive into the crochet patterns!  Like I said earlier, socks were something that were requested a lot when it came to crochet patterns to bring to the 2020 boxes.  Since it has been an entire year since we had socks in our last box, I knew I wanted to design something that it not only had gorgeous texture but was made with basic crochet stitches.  Meet the Wonderland Socks!  This socks not only have a gorgeous texture but the color pulling that is happening in the socks is absolutely amazing!  I know that sometimes socks can seem like an overwhelming crochet project and it is easy to get intimidated by them but once I made my first pair of socks back in 2017, I became hooked because I realized that socks were basically a crochet hat with a heal. So, if you can make a hat, you can make a pair of socks!

I wanted to stay in the keeping our toes/legs/feet warm theme and I have been wanting to design a pair of adult leg warmers for a long time.  So the second pattern is the Wonderland Leg Warmers, these were a blast to make and I am obsessed with these beauties!  These Leg Warmers were designed in a unique way, just like a brim beanie worked brim up (like the Willow Beanie featured in our December 2019 Box), this socks are created by making a brim first, then working in the round the create the main texture.  Then if you have ever worked a brim beanie from the top down, that is how the top of the leg warmers are made.

Which crochet pattern is your favorite?  I have an obsession with crochet socks but there is something about these leg warmers that make me want to make a bunch more.

There is only enough yarn in the box to make one of the two projects. The leg warmers use about 75% of the skein and the socks use about 50% of the skein.

I hope that you are loving having two different crochet patterns to choose from each month!

We love putting together the boxes every month and adding every piece that goes into the box.  We brainstorm the yarn colors and decide if the crochet hooks will completely coordinate or complement the yarn.  Once I have the colors for the yarn chosen, then I decide what I am going to make. I let the colors of the yarn tell me what it wants to be! We have also loved finding coordinating stitch markers to complete the set.

If you received the January 2020 box I would love to know what your favorite item from the box was.  If you didn't receive the box, would still love to know which item I showed you was your favorite.  Remember you can now purchase this as the Wonderland Kit in our store.
