Market Day Bag Crochet Pattern

Market Day Bag Crochet Pattern

Over the years I have made a couple different bags, I have made two Totally Toteable Totes and the Honeycomb Beach Bag but I didn't have a market bag yet, so I had to design the Market Day Bag!  When I discovered Lion Brand's 24/7 Cotton, I knew I needed to make a market bag with it!  I wanted a bag that had a gorgeous open lace like look but it also needed to have a gorgeous texture.  Even though the fabric has a lace like look, the fabric is strong and durable!

Fasten off

You are now going to be working on the other side of the bag (working in the beginning chain from row 1).

Row 1: Join with a sl st, ch 1, 1 sc in same ch, 1 sc in next ch and each ch across. - 56

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, 1 sc in same st, sc2tog across until last st, 1 sc in last st. - 29

Row 3: Ch 1 and turn, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next st, sc2tog across until last st, 1 sc in last st. - 16

Rows 4-8: Ch 1 and turn, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st and each st across. - 16

Do not fasten off.

You are now going to be making the bag border and handles.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly across first side until you reach row 47, ch 70, join with a sl st to the other side of row 47, sc evenly across the second side until row 8, ch 70 and join with a sl st to the other side of row 8.

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next st and each st across the first side until you reach the ch 70. Working through both loops, work 1 sc in each ch of the 70 chs. 1 sc in each st across the second size until you reach the chain 70. Working through both loops, 1 sc in each of the 70 chs, join.

Rounds 3-5: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next st and each st around, join.

Lay the bag flat with side one up (side one is the same side as beginning of the round), matching up the corners. On the right side, use a stitch marker and place a stitch marker 10 stitches from the fold. Flip the bag over and repeat on the other side. You will need these stitch markers later!

When working the corner of the 9 stitches before the stitch markers, you will be working through the sc stitch on this side and the sc stitch on the other side to close the corner of the bag shut.

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next st and each st around until you have 9 stitches from the stitch marker. 1 sc in both stitches of the next 9 stitches.  1 sc in next st and each st around until you have 9 stitches from the stitch marker. 1 sc in both stitches of the next 9 stitches, 1 sc in the remaining stitches, join.

Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.
