Every year I crochet my husband a new beanie for the winter season but this past winter, there just wasn't enough time in the day to make him one. When there was just a few cold mornings left this year, I sat down and started make him this years beanie, but I didn't tell him that I was making it for him. As a designer, I am always designing, so no one ever assumes I am making something for them. When I was about half way through making the beanie, I asked him what he thought and he said he really liked it, I then couldn't keep the secret anyone that I was making the Simplicity Brimmed Beanie for him.

But after I made one for him, I knew I wanted to make one for myself as well, so that is what I did and know we both have Simplicity Brimmed Beanies. But working them in different colors and adding a pom pom can change the look completely. Grab your yarn, crochet hook and get hooked!

Pattern Key
- St/Sts: Stitch(es)
- Sl St: Slip Stitch
- Ch: Chain
- Sc: Single Crochet
- Hdc: Half Double Crochet
Special Stitches
- Lhdc: Linked Half Double Crochet – insert hook into the vertical bar of previous stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook.
- Hdc2tog: Half Double Crochet 2 Together – Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and inset hook into next st, then pull through all 5 loops.
Notes
- Chain 1 will NOT count as a stitch.
- The beanie is worked from the bottom up, starting with the brim which is worked in rows and then the rest of the beanie is worked in rounds.
- The beanie is worked in continuous rounds.
- When working the “lhdc” round, work that stitch loosely, so that you don’t change the circumference of the beanie.
To modify the Gruene Beanie into a messy bun beanie with a hair tie, you will want to work the round with 21 stitches working over the hair tie, then after you have made round 21, you will want to fasten off. If you don't have a hair tie, you can still make a messy bun beanie, if you fasten off after working the round with 21 stitches.
