Lions, tigers and bears, oh yea a Zebra Baby!  The Zebra Baby is a fun newborn prop to make that is simple way to make creative newborn photos. This crochet pattern is full of simple crochet stitches and comes out adorable! You can customize this Zebra Baby in any color scheme and for little boys, you can skip the ruffled pink brim (and bow of course).  I love newborn props, it is what inspired me to start crochet and the Zebra Baby was one of my first designs and is still one of my favorites!

Materials

  • Yarn: Medium, Weight 4; Black, White and Pink. Sample is made with Vanna’s Choice (Black, White and Pink Poodle)
  • Hook: K (6.50mm)
  • Tapestry Needle, Scissors and Measuring Tape

Sizing

  • Gauge: 12 Stitches and 10 Rows = 4”x4” (hdc)
  • These measurements are approximated, measure head to get accurate sizing needed.

Notes

  • Chain 1 will NOT count as a stitch.
  • Joining: When ending the rounds, you will join with a slip stitch into the 1st stitch (not the chain 1).



0-3 Months Beanie: (Circumference 13-14” and Height 5 - 5.5”)

You Need Your K Hook, Black, White and Pink Yarn

Start with Black Yarn, Make a Magic Ring,

Round 1: Ch 1, 7 sc in loop, join with a sl st in the 1st sc, pull tight. - 7

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 14

You are now going to alternate colors after every round!

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 21

Round 4: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 28

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 35

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st and each st around, join. - 35

Repeat Round 6 until the beanie measures 4.5 inches tall for newborn or 5 inches tall for 1-3 months, then change to pink and continue to brim.

Brim Round 1: Ch 1, 1 sc same st, 5 dc next st, *skip next st, 1 sc next st, 5 dc next st; repeat from*, join. - 72

Fasten off and weave in any loose ends                



Ears (Make 2)

You Need Your K Hook, Black and White Yarn

Start with White Yarn, Make a Magic Ring,

Round 1: Ch 1, 7 sc in loop, join with a sl st in the 1st sc, pull tight. - 7

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 14

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 21

Round 4: Change to Black Yarn, Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st and each st around, join. - 21

Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.

Hair (Optional)

You can use black worsted weight yarn or fun fur yarn. Wrap the yarn around your hand about 10 times, tie a knot around the center of the loops, leaving a long tail to sew onto the beanie. Cut the loops and trim until you have the length of hair you want. Sew the hair onto the top center of the beanie.

Bow (Optional)

You Need Your H Hook and Your Color Choice

Chain 11

Row 1: 1 sc in the 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across - 10

Rows 2-4: Ch 1 and turn, 1 sc in same st and each st across - 10

Trim: Ch 1, 1 sc around the enter square.

Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.

Fold the piece in half, using a long piece of yarn, tie a tight knot around the center of the piece and pull tight to give the puffed bow look. Continue to wrap the yarn around the bow until you reach the desired look. You can either leave a long tail for the center wrap to sew the bow onto the hat or attach an alligator clip.

Tushy Cover: (6 ½ inch diameter)

You Need Your K Hook and Black and White Yarn

Starting with Black Yarn, Make a Magic Ring,

Round 1: Ch 1, 7 sc in loop, join with a sl st in the 1st sc, pull tight. - 7

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 14

You are now going to be alternating between white and black yarn!

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st; repeat from*, end with 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, join. - 21

Zebra Tail (7 inches long braided)

Cut 6 strands of yarn, 3 white and 3 black about 14 inches long. Using a smaller crochet hook, pull the yarn evenly around the magic ring. Braid the tail, in the direction covering the seam, until the desired length is reached, then tie a knot and trim the ends.
